Serving Up Ribs in the Shack
December 16, 2013
Purchased by Tim Johnson and his wife Barbara in 2000, Cooter Brown’s Rib Shack, nestled on a curve along 204, serves up ribs, BBQ, fried pickles, fried mushrooms and more daily. Tim says he and Barbara always wanted to own their own business and finally had the opportunity to invest in 2000. When asked to describe Cooter Brown’s, Tim says, “It’s just a shack with a cozy and friendly atmosphere.” If he had to recommend one meal for a visitor, “I’d say the Dry Rub Ribs. We sell a lot of the Deep Fried Corn, something different, and everyone says our baked beans are good. For an appetizer, the Hillbilly Eggrolls are different; you can’t buy them anywhere. It’s slowly passing the fried dill pickle spears as the best-selling appetizer.” When asked about the best thing about their location in Jacksonville, Tim states, “You get to see different people, from out of town, the CDP, the crowd from JSU, the college sports atmosphere. It’s all pretty neat.” Listed in Alabama’s 100 Dishes to Eat Before You Die for their ribs, Cooter Brown’s is a must for visitors and residents alike.
