The Peerless: A Downtown Tradition

December 20, 2013

IMG_4660Since the Saloon’s start in 1992, Kristy Farmer and partner Wilbur “Dub” Nolan took advantage of the space left vacant by Lil’ Cajun, broke down walls from the saloon, and opened the Peerless Saloon and Grille in 2008. Kristy had been in food service for 30 years. The Peerless features architectural elements from the St. Louis World’s Fair of 1904, and on the historical registry as Alabama’s oldest Saloon, it lives up to the slogan, “locals serving locals since 1899.” In 2011, The Peerless was also voted by the Alabama Department of Tourism as one of the top places to hear live music in the state. Recently, The Peerless took home the prizes for Best Lunch, Best Dinner, and Best Sandwich at the Chamber’s 2013 Business EXPO and Taste of Calhoun County. Kristy boasts that the success all because of her amazing staff, “I have a kitchen and dining room of energetic, passionate people who love their job, love their community, and love to help. I can’t describe how proud I am.” Kristy’s recommendations include the award winning Cuban Panini Sandwich, with its in-house smoked pulled pork and smoked ham smothered in Swiss cheese and spicy mustard, topped with dill pickles and DSC05959tightly pressed, and you must try their side of sweet potato fries. She also suggests the favorite and best-selling Fired Green Tomato Appetizer, and for dessert, she says one must try the Red Velvet Cheesecake. Kristy says, “Michelle can’t keep the cheesecake made; it flies off the shelf.” Kristy states, “What many people don’t know is that we serve breakfast any time of the day. We’re open at 10, seven days a week, and open late after midnight.”
