All in the Family: Covalli’s Italian Kitchen

December 26, 2013

covallisAs teenagers, Jason, David and Daniel worked in Upstate New York for an upscale Italian Restaurant. “That’s where they learned to cook,” says Gloria Covalli. The boys often visited their aunt in Atlanta and often thought it would be neat to have a restaurant there. Seeing Atlanta as too pricy, they traveled west and settled in Villa Rica in 2002. After being successful for about 5 years, the family decided to expand and opened a 6500 square foot place across the street. In 2009, the lease was up, and the family decided to close that location. A few years later, Jason and John traveled from Villa Rica to Gadsden, working for their aunt, and each time they passed 1101 S. Quintard, they liked the location. “Calhoun County reminds me of home. Not the weather, but the hills, the terrain, it’s like Upstate New York,” says Gloria Covalli. On July 1, 2011, Covalli’s Italian Kitchen opened in Calhoun County. Their staff is dedicated, like Jessica who continues to travel from Villa Rica each day. “I do it for the family,” says Jessica, “They’re awesome.” It is truly a family business, with mom and dad doing the dishes, Gloria making the cakes, her husband fixing the pizzas, the sons fixing the pastas, their daughter pitching in when she’s not in school. “I’m blessed and privileged to work with my kids every day,” says Gloria, “who gets to do that?”
DSCN3379The local favorite and most popular item is the Tuscan Bowtie Pasta, bowtie noodles with creamy Alfredo sauce, mozzarella, chicken, bacon, and tomatoes. For dessert, one can top a meal off with Italian Cream Cake or a delicious Tiramisu, and for an appetizer, everyone enjoys the Garlic Cheese Bread.
Gloria says most of all that they are, “very appreciative of the people who support Covalli’s and enjoy the food. You meet a lot of people in the restaurant, and it’s rewarding to feed them and hear them say how much they enjoyed it. That’s the satisfying part, and the people here are so welcoming.”
