Annual Economic Update
March 3, 2014
Each year, Jacksonville State University’s Center for Economic Development and Research updates the Chamber’s membership on the state of the economy in Calhoun County, the state, and the nation.
The Center for Economic Development at JSU concentrates on providing specialized assistance to businesses and government. Examples of their services include economic impact studies, marketing surveys, employee attitude assessment, training, and personnel and pay plan development.
This will be the 12th annual Economic Update for the Chamber, which includes the results of a recent economic-outlook-prediction, chamber membership survey for the upcoming year, shared with attendees along with a real-time, follow-up survey questions. Other information covered includes revenue numbers from area municipalities, a labor force update, housing numbers, and other similar information for the state. Leslie McClure, Vice President and Regional Executive, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Birmingham Branch, will also provide attendees an update on the state of the economy in the southeast and the U.S.
As the regional executive and senior officer of the Birmingham Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Lesley McClure oversees Birmingham’s economic and financial education programs and provides regional input into the Atlanta Fed’s monetary policy process. McClure’s primary role is being the “face of the Federal Reserve” in the branch’s region, which covers the state of Alabama. In this capacity, she represents the Fed in developing relationships and organizing and participating in activities throughout the region designed to gather both quantitative data and anecdotal grassroots information on economic conditions.
Other Economic Update presenters include JSU’s Dr. Richard Cobb and Dr. Mark Hearn.
Dr. Cobb earned his Ph.D. in Management Science/Operations Research from the University of Alabama, his Masters from Jacksonville State University, and his BS from Auburn University. During his tenure at Jacksonville State, Dr. Cobb has taught both undergraduate and graduate level courses in Production/Operations Management, Strategic Planning, Business Decision Making, and Simulation Modeling. His main research interests are in the areas of Strategic Planning and Production and Operations Management.
Dr. Hearn received his BS degree in Management from the University of North Alabama, completed his Masters in Business Administration, and earned his Ph.D. in Business Administration at the University of Arkansas, completing post graduate studies at the University of South Carolina in International Management. Dr. Hearn has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses including Business Information Management, E-Commerce, Organizational Behavior, Business Communications, Organizational Communications, International Business, and International Management. Dr. Hearn’s main research interests include group dynamic comparisons for face to face teams vs virtual teams, university outreach programs, and retirement preparation comparisons based upon gender.
According to Dr. Hearn, “The economy in Calhoun County improved in 2013. Unemployment declined over the year. Our cities and our state collected more revenues for their operations. More homes were sold. However, while things improved, the amount of that improvement was marginal. Last year when we asked the Chamber membership how they felt things were going to play out this year, the largest response was that things would remain the same. That is essentially what happened. This year, we are seeing more positive signs early and membership’s sentiment reflects that optimism.”
