We are the Chamber… The Alabama Land Trust

With organizations like the Alabama Land Trust, people are not always aware of what they do. The Land Trust “protects land for present and future generations,” such as private land owners establishing conservation easements on farm and forest lands. This conservation supports the future of our community and regional quality of life.  As Deputy Director Anna Berry states, “People relate to the mission, but don’t know about the Land Trust unless they’re looking for it.” Representing both the Alabama Land Trust and Georgia Land Trust, with offices also in Georgia, the Land Trust protects conservation easements across both states.

Initially, the Land Trust started in Piedmont, but has grown the Choccolocco Creek corridor program through partnerships and the Choccolocco Creek Watershed Alliance, focusing on this high priority watershed region. The Choccolocco Creek Watershed stretches across Calhoun, Talladega, Cleburne and Clay Counties, with approximately 246,000 acres, draining 376 square miles of land into Choccolocco Creek. Locally, with their focus on conservation, including private land, they have hosted the Terrapin Duck Race, a project to raise money for mile markers along Terrapin Creek, the Renew Our Rivers for Choccolocco Creek on October 11, Rain Barrel Workshops, Hiking Trips on the Pinhoti, and work with JSU for Photography Classes, film screenings and more. 

Through the Chamber, the Land Trust is able to promote events and garner visibility for who they are and what they are doing. Land Trust staff members are actively engaged in Chamber events and participate in programs, such as Christy Claes participating in the Chamber’s Leadership Calhoun County.
