Familiar Surroundings: A Calhoun County Familiarization Tour

June 26, 2015

DSC01953    What is a fam tour? In our case, it’s a day where the Chamber hosts elected officials, hoteliers, members of the public, and other professionals from the hospitality industry to experience and see all that is available for tourists and our public in the Calhoun County region.

The purpose is to increase knowledge of our region DSC01970for our “front line staff” to share with visitors, their friends, family and fellow community members. Experiencing the “Natural Attractions” we have in our region, first-hand, allows us to better serve our community.

June 23 and 24, we took two tour groups around Calhoun County to experience our sites and DSC02034history. Between each stop, attendees played “Cash Cab” like trivia about our region and made stops at sites like the Freedom Riders’ Mural on Gurnee Avenue in Anniston, The Anniston Museum Complex and Buckner Event Plaza. At these sites, we would hear presentations from their staff and other attractions including White Oak Vineyards, CAST, CMP, Cane Creek Golf Course, the POW Cemetery, area bike trails and other area golf courses.DSC02047

The two groups traveled to JSU to see the breathtaking view from atop the Houston Cole Library and hear from the Mountain Longleaf Wildlife Refuge, Choccolocco Mountain ORV Park, and Jacksonville State University programs including the Mountain Center, the Canyon Center and Longleaf Studios.DSC01997

Attendees enjoyed lunch each day at Zoe’s on the Lake in Weaver. The tour also included presentations at Eubanks Welcome Center in Piedmont on Dugger Mountain Music Hall and Terrapin Creek, and then out to Janney Furnace.

Each day came to a close with regional presentation DSC02051at the Oxford Performing Arts Center from Cheaha State Park, Desoto Caverns Family Fun Park, Floating Fun and Cider Ridge Golf Course.

Attendees learned new things about their communities, and we challenge you to take a moment this summer to do the same. We have some of the most beautiful, historically significant landscapes and sites throughDSC02011 out our region, and your Chamber & Visitors’ Center is your #1 source of information.
